THE ART OF BLOCK PRINTING

Practiced in India since 12th century, beautiful ethnic designs are carved onto various size wood blocks called “bunta”. Fabrics are fixed to a flat surface, the hand carved patterned blocks, bunta, are individually dipped in natural vegetable dyes and stamped onto the fabric, forming intricate patterns from very simple to multiple complex layers using a variety of colors. Any imperfections become a natural aspect of this hand block print process.

THE ART OF KALAMKARI
Kalamkari

The exquisite Kalamkari (“kalam” meaning pen and “kari” is the artwork), is a combination of block pattern printing and hand painting, often using natural dyes. Persian motifs such as trees, flowers, leaf and designs inspired by nature and animals are popular. The process of creating the carvings take between a week or two, depending on the complexity of the design. Each color has its own block. Carved blocks last several months but if not used eventually deteriorates. Block designs are generally based on Indian mythology. The nature of the process recommends washing with mild detergent in cold water, washing colored clothing separately, and not soak or dry in bright sunlight.
